I am incredibly excited to announce the new comic book project I’ll be writing. For those of you who follow me on Twitter or Facebook, this announcement came last night in a series Tweets. For those of you who don’t follow me on Twitter or Facebook — what the hell is wrong with you people?! Sheesh.
But I digress.
The series I am exciting as hell to be announcing (and writing!) is Blindside. Along with series creator and all around killer artist, Marat Mychaels, this is the book I’ve been dying to write for years.
I remember the original Blindside comic by Marat back in the mid-90s. The single issue stood out to me for a couple of reasons. First off, it was one of the best super hero designs I had seen in years — easily one of the top 5 designs from the 90s. Absolutely great design. Second, there were some amazingly cool action sequences in the book — including a moment-to-moment martial arts sequence that felt like it was pulled right out of an old school Jet Li movie. As a long time fan of Hong Kong action films, the action of Blindside was something I really responded to.
Unfortunately, in an era where comics disappeared as quickly as they were published, only a single issue of the book was ever released by Image Comics. Without confirmation, I’d always assumed the book died when Extreme Studios left Image and became Maximum Press. Whatever the reason, I was always bummed the book had never been picked back up.
Fast forward a whole lot of years later and I find myself hanging out with the aforementioned Marat Mychaels. Somehow, we wind up talking about our love of comics, our love of insane action movies and our general feeling that the comic industry has become more than a little…boring.
We both felt like there was something missing in today’s comics.
The action was gone.
The testosterone had vanished.
Comics had no balls any more.
When Marat mentioned he wanted to do something to change that, I was all over whatever he had in mind. When Marat mentioned he was thinking about bringing Blindside back, I was already threatening physical harm to him, his pets and his comic collection if he offered the gig to any other writer.
Luckily, Marat agreed to me taking over the writing chores without actual injury having to be inflicted.
Over a bunch of conversations, Marat and I put together what I hope will be one of the most insanely action-packed comics that has come through the comic industry in a very long time. We’re aiming to bring back the balls to comics by infusing high energy, high impact visuals with shots of Hong Kong action storytelling. The best way to describe the book is Casino Royale written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by John Woo…times ten.
If you’re in to the action films of Seung-wan Ryoo, Michael Bay or Robert Rodriguez, then Blindside is for you.
If you love martial arts or “gun fu,” then Blindside is for you.
If you feel like the only “Marvel” left in your comics is marveling that you can stay awake while reading them, then Blindside is for you.
If you love talking heads and comics where nothing happens for issues at a time, then you should still buy Blindside and see what a real comic should be. 😀
In all seriousness, Marat and I are putting together a comic made for guys like us to enjoy — comics that we’d love to read and pay money for. The series is a labor of love for the both of us and I think you’re going to get a kick out of it.
Read Blindside and be prepared to have your mind blown.
